20 years of TUI Umwelt Champion: The most sustainable hotels in 2016
Published 22nd Jul 2016
TUI celebrates 20 years of TUI Umwelt Champion and awards 181 Travelife Gold certified hotels all over the world for their high environmental and social standard.
More and more German holidaymakers attach importance to booking a ‘green’ hotel – and even more hoteliers respond to this trend and invest in the sustainability of their facilities. For more than 20 years, TUI, Germany’s leading tour operator, rewards hotels for their high environmental and social standard with the “TUI Umwelt Champion”.
This year participation was high again: 202 hotels of TUI’s international portfolio receive the coveted award. For the first time, this also includes hotels in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Dominican Republic.
The hotels need to have a valid sustainability certification, which reflects the environmental and social performance and is recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), such as Travelife. Travelife cooperates closely with the TUI Group. An overwhelming 90 percent of the ‘TUI Umwelt Champions’ have a valid Travelife Gold certification.
The awarded hotels use – among others – renewable energies (solar/ photovoltaic systems, biogas, etc.), local and seasonal products and technologies for water and energy reduction and support local projects and organizations.
The ‘TUI Umwelt Champion’ offers customers an orientation when booking a holiday as these hotels are specially pointed out in brochures and at www.tui.com. To help you book your next holiday at a 'green' hotel, a list of all TUI Umwelt Champions 2016 by destination can also be downloaded as a PDF.
